Such was the steel of the Zulu pride as they successfully defended king and land against the British invasion at Isandlwana in 1879. As they famously said: “Even if the British are as big as mountains, they will not come across the Buffalo River.” The Zulus made their stand and the British suffered their biggest defeat in any colony.
This art pays homage to some of the regiments who fought on that day.
The Leopards’ Den.
The Lions, who gained the praise, “Who dared to touch the angry lions, the lions who breathed fire through their mouths.”
The White-Faced Bulls, poetically praised as, “Those who catch the stones of heaven” referring to the onslaught of cannon balls that flew through the air.
The Black Mambas.
And the Benders of kings, of the British.
