Tales of legendary courage and victory weave through the fabric of Zulu history with one such victory gaining world fame. The Battle of Isandlwana in 1879.
Armed with spears and shields, the might of the Zulu regiments came to the fore, defeating the cannons and rifles of the British Army. It was the biggest colonial defeat ever suffered by Britain.
The heroic inspiration of a young prince, Mkhosana, spurred the Zulus to their victory.
Overwhelmed by the terror of bullets and cannon balls, weaponry that the Zulus had never set eyes on, they fell to the ground to avoid the onslaught. It was then that Mkhosana made a solo stand, and in the rich imagery of the Zulu language, he cried out: “Our king, the small branch that puts out a big fire, did not command us to do thus.”
The Zulu warriors rose as one, and with a forward surge, won the day.
Mkhosana fell during that battle but his posthumous praises continued to ring out. As the warriors left the battlefield, they broke into a marching song honouring the great prince, Mkhosana, chanting: “We salute the one who roared “
